BEAUTY TIPS: Basic Make-up Routines for Modern Mums

3:03 PM

After having a baby and getting so caught up with so many things from left to right, finding some time to look good and pretty can be a little daunting for mums. On seemingly rare occasions or days when going out for a family weekend, getting dressed up and playing pretty can be the least on our priorities especially when you've only got a minute to put yourself together.

As for me, getting the looks doesn't have to be a dilemma while balancing a busy lifestyle. It actually caused me all the more to find ways on how i can look fabulous despite my busy schedules. Why? Because parenting should be pretty cool by realizing that there's always a connection between feeling good and LOOKING good!

I have learned that applying a basic, natural look doesn't require a lot of skills or tools. There can be tons of tutorials that you can find on the internet about basic make-up artistry but I'm happy to share here the basic make-up routine that i do everyday whether i'm off to a business meeting, do errands for the home, drop the kids off at school or just to simply go out on a day to day basis. I'm not an expert but here's a few tips and some products that suits me personally which you might want to check too!

Prep your Skin. Start with a clean face. Wash with a gentle cleanser or your choice of facial soap or simply use a toner to wipe away any dirt and impurities from your skin. I usually do both, washing my face with my favorite facial soap and then followed by a gentle toner or cleanser. I love organic facial cleansers. You might want to check out what's good for your skin, there are a lot that you can find online and some stores today.

Moisturize. Skin moisturizers for face can keep your skin from getting too oily during the day, and will help moisturize any dry patches on your skin. I use a tinted moisturizer to cover pimple marks and other skin imperfections. It's a two-in-one kind of moisturizer from my own skincare line. It is not shiny and i don't have to wait a few minutes before i can apply my favorite foundation.

Apply just a few spots with your fingers to your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin, then blend it with your fingers or a foundation brush or make-up sponge, working the spots outwards from the center in all directions.

Perk up your tired eyes. I always put concealer under my eyes to fake that horrible eyebags with a fresh polished look even without complete sleep during my busy nights. You can use your finger tips to dot a bit where under-eye circles are darkest. Add a speck to other blemishes like pimple marks and acne craters from previous zits. I do the blending by using my fingertips most conveniently, but you can use a brush or a sponge whichever suits you better.

Revlon Age Defying Moisturizing Concealer in Light Medium Shade
has been my partner for so many years and i love it for my skin.

TIPS: Concealers should never be lighter than one shade away from your natural tone.

Apply the right shade of Foundation. There can be two types of foundation that we all use, some would prefer liquid foundations and for some, a two-way powder foundation will do as a base. Either way, the secret is finding the right shade perfect for your skin color. A good rule of thumb is to brush a little on your jawline: if it blends in, it's right for you. If not, try a shade lighter or darker.
I always work on neutral look and mastering it took me over my entire teenage years up to date until i came up to realize what is perfect for me and now i'm sticking with it for the rest of my life.

I use Revlon Photoready Liquid Makeup Foundation #003 Shell as base, or on some lazy days i have it as my on-the-go make up foundation alone. It's smooth enough to blend on my skin by just using my fingertips or you may wish to use a make up sponge to blend it.

TIPS: Again, finding the right shade of foundation is very important so find out what suits you best and don't over-do your makeup.

Shape and Trim your Eyebrows.  I had my eyebrows shaped in a beauty shop long time ago, and i've never had another chance to get back and had another trim. So what i did is i bought an eyebrow razor and had it done all by myself every time it needed be. If you haven't mastered it yet, then you need to call the expert. For some women, they use tweezers, but for me, it makes me sick and i cannot stand the long term effects of pulling out my eyebrows so i stick with the blades. Shaped and trimmed eyebrows always gives a clean and fresh look.

Eyebrow razors alike are available on Watsons

Fill in your Eyebrows. Eyebrow grooming can be a little time consuming, but it is one thing that i never want to miss out when doing my own make up. I can go out without any foundation but never without drawing lines on my eyebrows and my lower eye lids. It will give you an awake, alert and a refined look.

I love using Etude House's Drawing Eye Pencil in Brown Shade for my eyebrows. It's flat and triangular shape tip is so easy and convenient to use without having the hard time to draw that perfect line for eyebrows. It glides perfectly on the surface leaving a smooth trace from tip to bottom. I hoard it sometimes because whenever i visit the shop for this pencil it's always out of stock. To that event, my alternative is Revlon Brow Fantasy in Light Brown and a darker shade of brown for my lower eyelids. There are other brands that can give the same effect so it's for you to try out.

After filling-in the eyebrows with lines, brush it with an eyebrow brush for a cleaner and sophisticated look, giving attention to some excess lines on the sides.

Choose your Eyeshadow. With so much on the stores today, choosing the right texture, hue and brand for eyeshadow options can be incredibly intimidating. But you don't need a dozens of colors to have that glowing eyes. For this part, i choose atleast 3 shades of eyeshadow colors all in neutral tones. Because as housewives or working mums, we do not want to get too playful with so much colors on the eyes.

I love Revlon Photoready Impressionist Primer + Shadow in Shade #505. Apply the primer which is the lightest shade on the pallete followed by the brown shade and the darkest shade on the crease of the eyelids. Some would prefer a little sparkle but for me, i'm good with plain and neutral blend of colors on my eyes. It is decent, simple and elegant.

Having a flat nose can be depressing for some, or maybe some women just wanted to enhance their not-so-pointed nose. I'm a fan of noseline and i simply do it by choosing a neutral shade from my eyeshadow pallete. Using a brush, draw a line from the tip of your inner eyebrow, down to the tip of the nostrils (on both sides) followed by a gentle rubbing of the fingertips to scatter the shade giving it a more pointed look. [You may wish to skip this step though.]

Curl your Eyelashes. If you were born with that straight and limp eyelashes just like mine, then grab an eyelash curler. It lifts lashes and opens up the eyes. Next thing after curling those eyelashes is applying a mascara. There are tons of brands that you can find for your choice of mascara. I only uses mascara during special occasions when i have enough time to prepare, but on ordinary days that i'm on the rush, i intentionally skip putting the mascara.

Top your face with a flawless finish. As i have mentioned earlier, my preferred liquid foundation works as a make-up base but on some lazy days it can also be my finished foundation. But i would always prefer to get that flawless finish before heading out. And it is best achieved by topping it with a powder foundation to keep off that shiny look, giving you a cool and fresh finish.

I personally use, L'oreal Lucent Magique Skin Lumination Tri-Powder Foundation SPF19 PA+++ in Apricot Ivory shade. L'oreal has been my personal choice eversince because my sensitivity to cosmetics rarely landed me on some beneficial products and only this brand meets my expectations and prevents allergic reactions. It gives my skin a lit from within look with a luminous complexion that glows naturally with its semi-matte finish, creating a shine-free, fair and brightened complexion like there's no imperfections.

Add a Cheek Color. Choosing the right color for your cheeks is of great importance. On a day to day fresh and clean look, i always go for earth colors. Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. Smile as you do this or pout your mouth to clearly see where the apples of your cheeks are. Dab on the blush and blend upwards towards your temples.

The right brush for your blush on is also essential to achieve that glowing effect on your face without damaging the skin due to harsh and hard brush strokes on the face.

I personally use Mac Kabuki 182 Brush. It is soft and smooth on my face and small enough to carry anywhere with its own pouch. I pair it with Mac Powder Blush in Matte, shade of Melba. Earth colors are good to go for an everyday polished look. Cheek tints are good too, but if you're having a hard time blending the right amount on your cheeks just like me, then go for powder blushes.

Choose a lip shade. Just like everything else, your choices of lip color can determine your personal style. If you are just like me and any other women who loves lipsticks more than anything else then having a dozen of shades can be thought provoking on which is which. The key is, you simply have to figure out the kind of occasion or mood you are in to set the perfect shade for your lips.

There are a lot of good to great lipsticks at every corner nowadays, and i've tried quite a lot of different brands, so check out your personal preference for lippies.

These days i'm obsessed with the newest from Happy Skin Cosmetics. Shut Up and Kiss Me Moisturizing Lippie offers three-fold lip service, the shine of a gloss, the pigment of a lipstick and the hydration of a balm. So it's an all-in-one total care. I love using it and it's perfect for my lips.

Retouch. Now that you're all done and ready to go, there's more that i just wanted to share. Our day can be long and tiring enough for all the woes of career and motherhood and squeezing a minute or two to freshen up that glam look which we started in the morning can become frustrating in the afternoon. So here's what i do. I  do a quick retouch. And retouch doesn't have to undergo through all the steps all over again.

I always have a compact of oil control powder to freshen up anytime and once i got a chance to sit in the washroom. I use Etude House Dear Girls Oil Control Pact. It smoothens and dries up that unwanted shine on my face in a snap without adding a different shade. Add a little touch of your favorite lippie and you're good to go!

TIPS: Some products may cause an allergic reaction to sensitive skin. If you know you have sensitive skin or simply want to be cautious, seek out makeup that is labelled "hypoallergenic". Products mentioned above are my own personal preferences and these are the brands that i do really use and i've tested it for years, hence, i'm confident with them.

So there you have it beautiful Mums!  Enjoy your fresh, glowing face all day and everyday with our simple tips!
